Veteran Peer Mentor
Salary: $21.79 per hour
Hours: Per-Diem, up to 10 hours per week as needed
Location: Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project, Suffolk County
Availability: Immediate
The Veteran Peer Mentor is an individual who has served in the United States armed forces (preferably including at least one tour of duty), who can serve as a positive example, and is committed to assisting other veterans, and their family members in achieving successful reintegration and personal wellness following separation from active duty.
Responsibilities:
- Engage veterans and family members on an individual basis as needed
- Co-Facilitate peer support groups weekly at sites to be identified
- Mentor group participants, individuals, and their family members, through phone, e-mail and face-to-face contacts and link to needed community resources and services
- Commit to initial and ongoing peer mentor training and supervision as required
- Complete reports on group attendance, individual contacts, travel and expenses in a timely manner
- Assist project leadership with publicizing the Dwyer Project through a range of activities, including but not limited to, literature distribution at assigned events, media interviews, panel discussions and conferences as schedule permits
- Honorably Discharged Veteran of one of the United States armed services, or currently serving National Guard or Reserve member
- Attendance at one Dwyer Project Peer Support Group meeting (either as a group member or Dwyer Project job applicant)
- Previous experience participating in and/or facilitating a self-help group preferred
- Knowledge of community services for Veterans and their families preferred
- Commitment to learning and growing as a provider of peer support
- Complete a face-to-face interview and all employment application forms
- Comply with all requested background checks

- Maintain valid driver’s license
