Overview

Mission Statement

Empowering and inspiring people of all communities to identify, pursue and sustain healthy, meaningful lives.

Goals

As the local chapter of Mental Health America and of the Mental Health Association of New York State, it is our mission to drive evidence-based practices, information, education, and resources to the residents of Suffolk County.

We believe mental health is as important as physical health, and it is our goal to ensure that all of our local needs and voices are heard and recognized by government leaders, the business community, advocacy groups, and educational organizations in our region.

History

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness was founded to address the increasing mental health needs of Suffolk County. Our mission is not only to provide services but also to promote mental wellness through education and advocacy.

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful Suffolk County organizations:

  • Mental Health Association in Suffolk County
  • Clubhouse of Suffolk
  • Suffolk County United Veterans

Suffolk County is home to a diverse population, including under-resources groups who often face barriers to mental health care. We recognize the unique challenges faced by these populations and tailor our services to meet their specific needs. Programs focused on youth, veterans, and individuals experiencing homelessness highlight our commitment to inclusivity.

Our extensive array of mental health services are tailored to the individual’s needs. We see the whole person. Because mental health connects with all aspects of our lives. We practice the groundbreaking whole-person approach which addresses all key areas of our well-being: emotional, physical, occupational, social, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, and financial.

We celebrate the current moment of increased awareness around mental health issues. It’s an important shift for which we have worked hard. Increased awareness will help eradicate the stigma around mental illness that still causes so much harm. It will also help us understand the importance of prevention, how taking mental health seriously can save lives.
