Healing Connections Peer Support Group Facilitator

Salary: $20.00 per hour

Hours: 6-12 hours per week

Location: Suffolk County including, but not limited to Ronkonkoma, Riverhead, Amityville and on-line

Availability: ASAP

Position Description:

MHAW’s Healing Connections Peer Support Group provides both, in person and online self-directed community mutual support.  Our support groups are not clinician facilitated; facilitators are trained Peer Specialists who host, facilitate, and offer mutual supports with respect to our Guiding Principles and Core Values.  Our mutual supports are offered for and by those of us who experience emotional distress, extreme and/or altered states of consciousness, labels of psychiatric diagnosis, substance use, and trauma/trauma responses.  The facilitator role will include:

  • Preparation, host, and facilitate Healing Connections Peer Support Group:
    • In person
      • Currently, Thursdays from 6:30 –9:00 pm Ronkonkoma location
    • Online
      • Currently, Saturdays and Sundays from 6:00 –8:00 pm
    • Sharing and reviewing our Healing Connections Peer Support Group Guiding Principles and Core Values at the start of each meeting and referring back to during times of disconnect
    • Facilitating, inspiring, and supporting co-creation and sustainability of a ‘most’ safe environment that allows acknowledgement of and holding space for happiness, sadness, anger, fear, surprise, contempt, and uncomfortableness
    • Offering and facilitating, inspiring, and supporting others in offering mutual support through connection and based on the key principles of respect, shared responsibility, and mutual agreement of what is helpful
    • Check, read, complete action items, and timely response to emails and voice mails
    • Attend and participate in monthly supervision meetings and additional staff meetings as scheduled

This position is reserved for trained Peer Specialists who demonstrate knowledge and practice of, the values and principles of Trauma-Informed Peer Support.  The candidate must possess and grow the following skills:

  • Achieve and maintain the New York Certified Peer Specialist, Provisional (NYCPS-P) certification
  • Exhibit sound oral, reading, writing, and computer skills, with basic knowledge in application such as Zoom, Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel, and Outlook
  • Exhibit sound, interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Continually seek to enhance skills, proficiency, philosophy, and practical understanding in all areas pertinent to peer support/services.
  • Quiet and presentable space with uninterrupted internet access
