Outreach and Training Peer Specialist

Salary: $20.51 per hour

Hours: 1) Full time (37.5 hrs/week) – includes one evening 2) Part time (18.75 hrs/week) – Hours TBD

Location: Various locations in Suffolk County

Availability: ASAP

Position Description:

MHAW is expanding our Careers in Recovery and Wellness Training Center which has trained and prepared hundreds of people who have lived experiences to launch their career as a Certified Peer Specialist.  Full time and Part time  Training Advocates will be involved in several projects to support student success including, but not limited to, delivering the Careers in Recovery and Wellness training and supporting the success of CRW participants and graduates in internship experiences. .  This is an innovative, exciting, fast paced, and challenging employment opportunity.   Interested candidates must be highly motivated, with interest in working in a leadership, supportive, and rapidly developing role within MHAW.  This is not a clinical position and is reserved for a trained peer specialist who has their own lived experience with emotional distress, extreme and/or altered states of consciousness, labels of psychiatric diagnosis, and/or who are trauma survivors.  Responsibilities and tasks will include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Ability to articulate, facilitate, support, and model peer support principles and values
  • Answer calls, voicemails, and emails seeking information about the CRW program
  • Co-develop and revise training and support materials as needed
  • Cultivate growth of relationships with new and existing community partners
  • Facilitate interviews, trainings, workshops, presentations, and support groups
  • Offer ongoing supportive services aimed at assisting aspiring or current peer specialists to obtain and maintain New York Certified Peer Specialist certification as well as meaningful internship and/or employment
  • Support cultivation and growth of offered peer support services
  • Support event planning
  • Offer mutual support through connection and based on the key principles of respect, shared responsibility, and mutual agreement of what is helpful
  • Maintain confidentiality and mutual respect
  • Maintain established system for administration functions in accordance to MHAW standards and funding source requirements
  • Attend, participate, and effectively utilize supervision and required/requested meetings and trainings
Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • Completion of Peer Specialist training
  • New York Certified Peer Specialist preferred, provisional certification accepted
  • Public speaking experience
  • Experience in delivering training preferred
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the values and principles of peer support
  • Ability to model, facilitate, and convey a message of hope, healing, and/or recovery
  • Effective use of self-disclosure to inspire hope and offer support for people who experience emotional distress, extreme and/or altered states of consciousness, substance use, labels of psychiatric diagnosis, and/or who are trauma survivors
  •  Patient, empathetic, supportive, demeanor with  excellent listening skills, and the ability to relate positively and enthusiastically to a large audience
  • Exhibit sound interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrate flexibility with ability to change priorities with limited notice
  • Exhibit sound reading , writing, and computer skills
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Availability to work days, nights, and weekends when needed
