Annual Appeal 2019

Happy Holidays! It is a festive time of year when people celebrate and share joy with their friends and loved ones. For some among us, however, these celebrations are strained and complicated by anxiety, depression, and the social and emotional consequences of disabling mental health and substance abuse conditions and trauma. When a trained and dedicated workforce is in position to respond, these challenges can turn to new found resilience, recovery, and new paths:

Sixteen-year-old Angie (not her real name) suffered anxiety and depression stemming from struggles with housing insecurity, family separations, bullying, and physical altercations with peers. She was suspended from school. As a result of her engaging with an Association for Mental Health and Wellness Children’s Care Manager, Angie was able to build a network of support that led her to reunification with her mother, stable housing, and high school graduation. Two years later, she is now on a management training track with her employer, has saved for and purchased a car, and is starting college education to study Business Administration.

Angie is just one of 10,000 people our incredible staff inspires each year. Their passion in doing their work was reflected by their helping to vote MHAW as one of Long Island’s Top Workplaces in 2019, ranking seventh by NEWSDAY among the Island’s mid-size companies. This holiday season, we are asking for your help to support our efforts to help more children like Angie and her family while making Long Island #MentalHealthStrong through our community mental health education, workforce development, advocacy, and services for people from childhood to senior years, including our Veterans and their families.

On behalf of our Board of Directors, our staff, and the people we serve, we deeply appreciate your consideration of support this holiday season.
